People often ask how they can help us continue the important work we do. There are many things you can do - from sending us a contribution to requesting a speaker for your next community meeting to volunteering in our offices or patient homes. The generous support we receive from our friends truly reflects our focus - celebrating life!

Wings of Hope also raises funds to further bridge the shortfall between insurance coverage and the actual cost of care. Our annual spring auction is our major annual fundraiser. Please support us by sponsoring, donating to or attending this event.

We welcome other organizations to raise funds on behalf of Wings of Hope. Walks or runs, bowling tournaments, antique car shows, and sales projects are a few examples that have been successful.

We encourage gifts by bequest through estate planning. Bequests can be made simply by adding a codicil to a will stating the desire to direct a percentage or specific dollar amount or property to Wings of Hope Hospice .

Will You Help?

December 2011

Dear Friend, Will you help us? Will you consider supporting our work with a gift? When you donate to Wings of Hope Hospice you help people like Ann and her mother.

"My Wings of Hope nurse chewed me out," Ann smiles as she remembers this. But the events of the night it happened had caused her to plummet into despair. Her mother had come to live with her in March and stayed until she died in August.

"When it got close to the end, I was giving my mother pain medication around the clock. One night when I checked on her, she was sleeping soundly and looked so peaceful that I decided not to disturb her. Later when she woke up, she was in a great deal of pain. I felt terrible that I had caused her such misery, and I just knew I was a terrible caregiver. I called Wings of Hope and got Threasa, one of the night nurses, who said 'Don't you dare go there. Do not say that. You have cared for your mother for months and you are doing a great job. I don't want to hear that you're not a good caregiver, not for one second.'

"The next day, Donna, our regular nurse, helped me learn how to better manage my mother's pain. But I will never forget Threasa's words . Her support for me was just as important as my mother's comfort.

"Donna was amazing, so compassionate. And she spent a lot of time making sure my mother's medications were just the right combination. One time, Diane, our Wings CENA, gave my mother a bath in bed. She asked if my mother knew where she was. 'Annie's Hospital,' was the reply. Diane was great.

"When my mom was still lucid and had a little strength, she was so stubborn about being independent. I slept many nights on a mattress on the floor by her bed so that if she tried to get up, she'd kick me and wake me. Once she told me that she loved me and she appreciated I was taking care of her." Ann pauses a moment to wipe her eyes. "This was so hard for me. I don't know how anyone could do this without help from Wings of Hope. I really don't."

Please consider a gift to Wings of Hope Hospice. It's not the size of your donation that matters - we believe we get what we need. What matters is your support and your love for our patients and the people who are closest to them.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Theresa Lynn, RN, LMSW
