What is Hospice?

Hospice is specialized healthcare for adults nearing the end of their lives. The focus of care is on comfort rather than cure. All needs of the patients are addressed, beginning with physical comfort, freedom from pain and other symptoms. The emotional and spiritual well-being of the patient are also primary concerns.

Hospice recognizes that a serious illness affects all those who love the patient, so we involve the entire family, offering services of support and education. Hospice is a unique type of healthcare in these ways:

  • Care is delivered by a team of professionals and volunteers who work as an interdisciplinary group
  • Emotional and spiritual needs are emphasized as well as physical needs
  • Family members receive attention and support during and after the illness

The word "Hospice" has its roots in old French and Latin and means "a shelter or lodging for weary travelers," a fitting description for those on their final journey of life. The modern concept of hospice came to us from England. Hospice in the United States began in the early 70's in Connecticut.

Hospice in Nursing Homes and Hospitals

Wings of Hope Hospice provides care wherever the patient lives. Although patients are mostly receiving hospice in their homes, care is also delivered in the hospital, nursing home, assisted living facility, adult foster care facility, foster home, or home for the aged. We provide care through written agreements in all hospitals and nursing homes located in Allegan County and many in surrounding communities.

Hospice can work with facilities outside of the county if that is where the patient and family prefer care. We are committed to provide care wherever it is needed and to work collaboratively with facility staff and provide training on end of life care.

Dear Friend, Will you help us? Will you consider supporting our work with a gift? When you donate to Wings of Hope Hospice you help people like Ann and her mother.

"My Wings of Hope nurse chewed me out," Ann smiles as she remembers this. But the events of the night it happened had caused her to plummet into despair. Her mother had come to live with her in March and stayed until she died in August. Read more here...
